john_bradford - Our (Australian) official history records 27 FEPoWs executed for attempting to escape, 193 for 'other reasons'. Imperial awards policy re- PoWs killed as a result of attempting to escape was to award posthumous MIDs. I have found almost 100% acceptance of this in European theatre eg I have the names of a dozen or so Australians, including 4 who were in 'great escape'. In Far East, however, of the 27 only 2 received posthumous recognition. I have taken up this anomaly with Australian Government for nigh on a year now with little +ve progress to report. Latest is that they have sent details over to UK Govt for their advice. The reasons these men did not receive any awards was probably due to an in-house stuff-up, their non-issue had nothing at all to do with British. But I suspect that when reply is received from British, it will be to say there is nothing they can do, bottom line being drawn on WWII awards in 1952. Two questions: Does anyone know of similar instances where British FEPoWs were executed for attempting to escape (Dunlop mentions one such incident in his diary, IIRC) and did they receive posthumous recognition? It would appear over last 50+ years neither next-of-kin nor former FEPoWs had ever known about this failure to make awards.
